Educated by Tara Westover is a powerful, brutal view of the importance and cost of an education.
Born in rural Idaho in 1986 to a devout, survivalist, but deeply paranoid father and a submissive, self trained, talented herbalist mother, Tara lives in a world of fear that the government will interfere with her family. With hospitals and doctors forbidden and little formal education, Tara helps her family stockpile food, weapons, and fuel, along with working long hours in the family junk yard. This combined with a violent, troubled older brother, leaves Tara in a a life where she see only one way out-college. However, as she has had no formal schooling and her homeschool lessons sporadic at best. college seems unachievable. Despite these roadblocks, Tara is accepted to Brigham Young University and heads to college and her first classroom experience ever at 17. Overwhelmed by the contrast between the life she is used to and the one is trying to achieve, Tara has an uphill battle to achieve an education, one that will result in a splintering that is both necessary and heartbreaking.
Wonderful and haunting, Dr. Westover is a brilliant writer (and person in general-she's earned a doctorate at Cambridge). This book is the type of memoir that ranks with other modern classics like The Glass Castle and Angela's Ashes.
