Review of Island of the Mad & a GIVEAWAY!

Island of the Mad, the latest title in the Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes series, is a fast paced, smart, glittery and gritty read. Jumping from the English countryside, to the insane asylums of 1920's England, to beautiful Venice as it enters a dark chapter, Island is a good mystery and a fun read. 

Imagine if Watson were a young, whip smart woman who doesn't care much for conventions, and you have Mary Russell. Such an excellent character would shine in any book, but setting Mary down into the world of Sherlock Homes is perfect. The two of them work well together and they share several scenes in this book as a team, a refreshing take on the average Holmes story. As Mary looks for the missing, mad aunt of a dear friend, history weaves into the story seamlessly-Mussolini's Blackshirts, Cole Porter on piano- and makes it even more intriguing and enjoyable. I love a mystery series where each book can stand alone, and .the Mary Russell series does that,  allowing you to enjoy each book on it's own merit. A perfect summer read.
